Google Adwords Quality Score: What Not To Do

September 21st, 2007 · 1 Comment

Offering some rare insight into what specifically gets factored in to Adwords quality score…Google offers up some advice. I’ve pulled out the bullet points from their blog on things they say will hurt your quality score:

*Data collection sites that offer free gifts, subscription services etc., in order to collect private information
*Arbitrage sites that are designed for the sole purpose of showing ads
*Malware sites that knowingly or unknowingly install software on a visitor’s computer

And things that will likely your quality score:

*eBook sites that show frequent ads
*’Get rich quick’ sites
*Comparison shopping sites
*Travel aggregators
*Affiliates that don’t comply with our affiliate guidelines

So, in sum, here’s what Google wants from you: (in my words)

*Don’t collect private data unless you’re offering something of real value (that “free” iPod doesn’t count)
*Pure PPC arbitrage sites are a no-no
*Malware, Adware, Badware, Parasiteware, etc. etc. are all bad
*Cheezy eBook sites that offer nothing more than a way to take your money are evil. However, credible eBooks on credible sites are probably ok.
*There is no such thing as “get rich quick”, so make sure your site offers something more than 1 page on how to get rick quick
*Comparison shopping engines, travel aggregators, and other datafeed mash-up type sites could be in trouble…unless they offer additional value.
*Don’t try to “fake” a good site. Just make a good site and Google will hopefully be happy. :)

The Landing Page is one of the least-addressed yet most important components of the Adwords Quality Score calculation.

Got “Slapped”? It’s a Quality Score mis-match between keyword/ad and landing page.
