Gmail Tip: Fight Spam

July 20th, 2007 · No Comments

If you use Gmail, this tip will help you keep tabs on who is using your email for what. Do you ever wonder who shared/sold your email address? Next time you give your email to a website, email list, etc… try this:

Add a “+” symbol after your Gmail name, followed by whatever you would like to use to track that email address.

For example, if you wanted to change your email address you have stored with Amazon.com, you could change your email to:  name+amazon@gmail.com (that’s if your gmail address is name@gmail.com)

Now lets say your name+amazon@gmail.com address starts getting a bunch of spam and nonsense because Amazon has shared your email address with 3rd parties, or Amazon is just emailing you too much…you can create a filter to either archive or trash anything sent to name+amazon@gmail.com…problem solved!

Using this trick is very handy when some website or service claims they were not responsible for sharing your email address…you’ll know when they did.  :)
