For any of you out there who are fans of Wordpress (what this blog runs on) - you should have a look at Drupal. After multiple people telling me I should start using Drupal as a CMS to run websites…I finally checked it out. If you are comfortable using Wordpress, Drupal isn’t much more difficult and you seem to get a lot more features. My very early impressions from a not-very-techie person:
Drupal is very easy to install, and is actually even easier than Wordpress. So far, I still prefer Wordpress for blogging, but Drupal comes packaged with some useful goodies that allows you to make a full-blown website complete with a blog, forums, content, articles, etc… all right out of the gate. It’s more like a full-featured content management system vs. being just a blog CMS. It also comes packaged with several nice and easy-to-work-with themes to choose from. On top of the included themes, you can browse tons more over at Theme Garden. There seems to be a lot of great Drupal modules available (modules to Drupal are kind of like plugins to Worpress) Also, there seems to a pretty big community of Drupal fans, Drupal developers, Drupal designers, etc.. out there willing to help and/or be hired to do work for you. Some examples of some of the larger Drupal powered websites online right now are: Redstate.com, TheOnion.com (probably the most famous Drupal site), Drupal.org, AirAmerica.com, AvrilLavigne.com, EFF.org, and TeamSugar.com. Drupal really seems to be rising in popularity, has been getting some nice press, and even winning some awards. I’m glad I checked it out. If you want to try it out, you can download Drupal here. It’s totally free and open source…awesome!

I’ve only done a cursory use of Drupal. In the same vein, I do like Joomla (http://www.joomla.com), which I have used more than a bit. If I really had use for all the features of either of these offerings, I would migrate.
